Desmond Tutu

Desmond Mpilo Tutu, born in 1931, became the first black South African Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town. He became known outside South Africa as a human rights activist and fighter against apartheid. Among his many awards is the Nobel Peace Prize given to him in 1984. Tutu is active in the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and homophobia.
